What Are People Currently Streaming?

Would our lives be the same without a series (or three) that we just can’t stop watching? For the large majority of us, streaming shows have become an integral part of our everyday life and contrary to traditional TV; it’s something that we can enjoy while on the go, away from home, or plain bored.

Last week, we took a look at the largest streaming platforms and why they are here to stay. This week, we’re taking a look at some of the most popular series that are streaming on a platform near you. So, hold on to your seat, and let’s see what everyone’s watching at the moment.

Binge-Watcher Is That You?

The phenomenon of binge-watching was not possible with TV’s rigidly programmed schedule that only gave you access to your favourite show once a week or perhaps a 30-minute slot every day if you were lucky. This all changed with the advent of streaming platforms. In the large majority of the cases, platforms started to offer complete seasons at the release date, and binge-watching was created. The phenomenon became so widespread that Collins Dictionary declared binge-watch the word of the year in 2015 while a 2019 survey revealed that 7.1% of male viewers typically have 5 to 7-hour series watching sittings.

The Shows to Watch

The variety of great shows that is currently available is truly incredible and it would be impossible to include them all here. So, we’re limiting ourselves to some of the most top trending shows that streaming platforms are offering.

 Loki

Quite possibly the most prominent offering from Disney Plus at the moment. The series follows Loki, the God of Mischief as he embarks on a sequence of adventures following the events of the Marvel movie Avengers: Endgame. Led by actor Tom Hiddleston, the series has been keeping audiences hooked since it was released.

Monsters at Work

Another fun series from Disney Plus follows the beloved Monsters Inc characters as they venture away from the big screen and make their way to streaming platforms. Full of laugh-out-loud moments, touching moments and the state-of-the-art animation that the franchise is known for, this is bound to become a firm favourite with grown-ups and little ones alike.

Virgin River

Based on the novels by Robyn Carr, this Netflix series follows a Los Angeles-based nurse seeking a fresh start as she relocates to a rural Northern California town. If you’re looking for a romantic comedy, this might be the show for you.

The series may be in its third season but the latest installment has placed it among Netflix’s top shows of the moment.

Sophie: A Murder in West Cork

As the name suggests, the story of this Netflix show is based right here in Ireland. As the name also suggests, the premise revolves around a harrowing murder that leads to a decades-long quest for justice.

Definitely, one to watch if murder mystery is your preferred genre.

How to Become a Tyrant

This one is for the history buffs amongst us. This fascinating docuseries dissects the characteristics and the moves that some of the world’s most notorious dictators have used to gain power and rule with an iron fist.

Bosch

We couldn’t conclude this post without including a popular show that is streaming on Amazon Prime. This series follows a homicide detective as he tries to resolve murders in Hollywood. Armed with experience as a special forces officer, the indomitable detective lets nothing hold him back from his quest for the truth.

From nail-biting mysteries to some proper light-hearted fun, it’s safe to say that Irish audiences are spoilt for choice at the moment. So, go get your favourite snacks, get comfortable, and press the play button.
